Research
Initial Research
I started by conducting external research to identify American employees’ key pain points and frustrations while at work, as well as the effect of stress at the workplace. Here are my findings:
User Research
I focused on gathering qualitative data via interviews to gain a deeper understanding of employees’ most common emotions while at work, as well as their meditation habits + pain points with meditation.
After conducting these interviews, I synthesized the research in a card sorting exercise. The goal of this exercise was to identify the key emotions and the general dispositions that users experience while at the workplace, to ultimately guide my design solution choices. Here are some key insights:
I then created “Teresa Ryan,” a persona to represent the users’ psychographics, behaviors, frustrations, and goals.
The Problem
Organizations have low employee retention rates because employees are stressed and have poor work/life balance. How might we use gamification and positive psychology to improve employee wellness, help employees stay engaged at work, and ultimately decrease employee turnover rate related to burn-out?

Design Process
I started the visual design process by brainstorming key features that would serve as solutions for users’ previously stated issues. I used each research insight to guide key design decisions.

Mid Fidelity Wireframes for Key Features
1. Meditation Progress and Reward Feature
After setting a goal to complete a certain amount of guided meditations, users will receive a notification that informs them of their progress. Progress notifications help increase users’ self-efficacy and confidence in their ability to meditate consistently. Progress bars are a form of gamification that make the wellness journey feel fun, rewarding, and less daunting.
2. Good News, Content Feature
The good news feature uses positive psychology to uplift the user at the beginning of the workday. This feature is prioritized on the home page to provide a friendly and inviting feel.
3. Connect Feature
An office manager, wellness coordinator, or other hired professional will connect with users to “check in” and make sure they have been pursuing wellness objectives. This feature harbors a more connected workplace and can assure employees that their employee consistently cares about their general well being.
4. Blog Feature
The blog feature consists of reputable wellness content to increase employees’ mental health and wellness education.
5. Task Organization Feature
The task organization tool helps users feel less scatterbrained and more in control of their day. This feature helps combat the “unorganized” concern that users stated in the interview process.
Interface Inspiration and Color Scheme
I created a mood board by focusing on calming color palettes and inspiration from competitors.
After analyzing the mood board, I created a color palette for the app; vibrant and playful yet calming.

User Flow
I created a user flow chart to map out the user experience and overall journey through the app.
